Winter Operational Emergency Procedures | Tuesday, January 26, 2010 | | Power Service Technical Bulletin Winter Operational Emergency Procedures 1. Water separators in severe cold weather: It is much more difficult for cold diesel fuel to flow through a water separator than a standard engine-mounted spin-on fuel-filter. For this reason, Power Service recommends the use of a 30 micron water separator fuel-filter element (water separator fuel-filter elements are available in 2, 10 and 30 micron sizes with the higher numerical rating being the most porous) in sub-zero temperatures. If a 30 micron filter is not available, use a 10 micron fuel-filter element. 2. If your fuel has been treated with Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost and the diesel fuel is liquid in the fuel tanks, but the engine will not start: This indicates plugged fuel-filters or fuel-filter icing. To solve this problem, remove the spin-on fuel-filters, pour out ice/wax mixture and refill with a 50/50 mixture of Diesel 9-1-1 and diesel fuel. Reinstall the fuel filters and start the engine. Idle the engine at a high RPM to allow recirculated fuel to heat the fuel tanks. 3. If you delay fuel treatment with Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement until diesel fuel has already gelled in the equipment fuel tanks: Reliquefy the diesel fuel by adding one 80-ounce container of Diesel 9-1-1 to each 100 gallons of diesel fuel in the equipment tanks. Remove and empty the fuel-filters. Fill the fuel-filters with a 50/50 mixture of Diesel 9-1-1 and diesel fuel (no need change fuel-filter elements). Reinstall fuel-filters. Start your engine and idle engine at a high RPM until the diesel fuel in the equipment fuel tanks has liquefied. To protect against gelling after reliquefication, add Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost to your equipment fuel tanks at the ratio of one quart to each 100 gallons of diesel fuel. 4. Use of Biodiesel in severe cold weather: There are significant cold-weather operability concerns with biodiesel. Power Service diesel additives are most effective treating biodiesel blends made from soy or canola oil. It is advisable not to exceed a blend of 10% biodiesel (B10) in severe cold weather. Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost should be used at a double treatment ratio when treating biodiesel blends. Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost is compatible with Diesel 9-1-1 when added to diesel fuel. | | Return to headlines ... |
